An MRI (Magnetic resonance imaging) is a non-invasive medical imaging technique that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed images of your brain.

An MRA (Magnetic resonance angiography or angiogram) is a type of MRI that looks at the body’s blood vessels.

MRA scans do not require x-ray exposure to find arteries that are becoming too narrow unlike computer tomography (CT) scans or angiograms. MRA scans may also be used to develop your treatment plan.

The MRI scanner is a large machine with strong magnets, which produces a powerful magnetic field. The scanner has a space for you to lie down on, and the space is surrounded by coils of wire. The coils produce radio waves that are sent into your body and then bounce off the different tissues and organs in your body. A computer uses these signals to create pictures of your brain or other body parts.

An MRI can help diagnose problems like:

  • Brain tumors

  • Strokes

  • Arteries that are blocked or narrowed by plaque buildup

  • Cancer

  • Heart and vascular disease

  • Muscular and bone abnormalities

What to Expect Before Your MRI?

An MRI is one of the most common types of medical imaging that doctors use to diagnose different conditions. It’s a non-invasive test that uses magnetic fields and radio waves to create detailed pictures of organs, tissues, and bones.

Doctors usually recommend an MRI for patients who are struggling with unexplained pain, unexplained loss of sensation, or unexplained neurological symptoms.

The patient will need to remove any metal objects from their body before they go in for the scan. This includes jewelry, piercings, hairpins or clips (including those on eyeglasses), and anything else made from metal. The patient should also not wear any clothing containing metal fasteners such as zippers or buttons.

How to Prepare for an MRI

What to do before your MRI:

  1. Please notify your physician if you are claustrophobic.  If necessary they can prescribe you medication to better tolerate your exam.  You will need someone to drive to your appointment as this medication can affect your alertness.

  2. Tell your doctor about any metal objects in or on your body. This includes things like jewelry, piercings, joint replacements, and surgical clips or plates.

  3. If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, let the staff know ahead of time so they can make special arrangements for imaging the baby during the exam.

  4. Bring a list of all your medications and prior surgical history.

  5. #4  Wear comfortable clothing.  Avoid clothing that contains metallic fasteners, hooks, zippers, loose metallic components, or metallic threads.  If necessary NuChoice can provide you with a gown to stay within MRI safety guidelines.

  6. Please inform the scheduler or technologist of any electronic devices implanted inside of your body.  Some examples are pacemakers, spinal cord stimulators, pain pumps, and programmable shunts.  We will need to know the make and model to ensure your device is safe before starting your exam.

What Happens During your MRI Exam?

An MRI is a medical imaging technique that uses magnetic fields to produce detailed pictures of the body. It is used to detect many types of diseases and disorders, such as brain tumors, spinal cord injuries, and heart disease.

The MRI scanner consists of a large magnet with a tube-shaped opening at one end that houses the patient's body during the examination. The magnet creates a strong magnetic field around the opening in order to align the protons in your water molecules and create an image
